Plain sight

Everyone keeps asking, "Where's Waldo?"

Wrong question.

The real question is, "What's Waldo's personal brand strategy?"

Think about it. The man has been wearing the same outfit for 35 years.

No rebrand. No pivot. No thought leadership newsletter. And millions of people are still looking for him.

Here are 5 lessons I've learned as a wizard in the Where's Waldo universe:

  1. Stand out from the crowd. Unless your entire business model depends on blending in.
  2. Build a recognizable personal brand. One striped shirt. One ridiculous hat. Infinite impressions.
  3. Create demand, not supply. Waldo never asks anyone to find him. They just do. That's inbound marketing.
  4. Location matters. Especially when nobody can figure out where you are.
  5. Make your customers work for it. Hide the value proposition in a crowd of 400 people and call it gamification.

People have spent decades searching for Waldo. And yet nobody has ever asked who's helping them find themselves. That's why I'm launching a six-week executive coaching program.

Enrollment opens as soon as someone finds the registration link.

Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I'm doing something nobody asked for.

Over the next six posts, I'll be sharing unsolicited LinkedIn thought leadership in the voices of my Halloween costumes from years past.

Culminating on Halloween with this year's character.

This was Post 4 of 6: Wizard Whitebeard

PS If you are in Japan and want to come to the best Halloween party, DM me.

Our family under a Happy Halloween banner: me as Wizard Whitebeard in a red robe, white beard, and blue hat holding a striped staff, my wife and two kids as Waldo, and our oldest as Odlaw.
